Archived! User-Made 3DS Video Injects

Back when I first modded my o3DS, hShop had a bunch of user-made video injections for the 3DS. It was a pretty interesting variety of stuff that people had decided to port to the 3DS video player, from Scott the Woz's "The Internet and You", to pirated versions of "The Batman" when it was brand new, stuff like that. It was really really cool when it was up, but I also understand why they removed that category. Easier to carry on the preservation of 3DS media when you're not worrying about the legality of the movies and TV shows you also have up for download.

After that section was removed from hShop, I opted not to delete the videos off of my 3DS, even when I removed most everything else after moving to my New 2DS. I couldn't find archives of them anywhere, and they obviously weren't on hShop, so I elected to just keep them. Forever, I guess.

For some reason, it wasn't until today that I realized... I have the means to dump them. It's really, really easy to dump 3DS software. I could've done it this whole time. So now I'm running some software dumps on my childhood 3DS, recovering both the lost fan-made injects, and also about a dozen Scott the Woz videos I converted that I've since lost the setup files to. I'm mostly just glad that I'll be able to store these away, and reinstall them on my New 2DS. Shinkai's "your name." will never look better/worse.

3DS video injection is harder than you'd think, or at least it was when I did it. I might still have the converter program I used on my backup drive, it was a whole process of running the raw video through a resize script, a formatting and compression script, and then doing the same for the images you wanted to use for the app icon, the banner, and the sound effect for the menu. I'm sure there's probably an app out there now that just let's you drag-and-drop all the resources and does the whole thing for you, but it was a whole ordeal to make even a single 3DS video app back then. I spent a lot of time converting those Scott the Woz episodes (can you spell "hyperfixation"?) and I was disappointed later on to find that I had lost all of the assets I used to create the app inject. At the very least, now I'll have the actual apps I made, along with all the others I downloaded back then. It's not all of them, but it's a few.

You can count the pixels in some of these, this is by no means the ideal way to view them, certainly not for the first time. But back then, this was how I watched my favorite movie of all time, "your name." I had a lot of fun converting Scott the Woz episodes and just watching them on my 3DS for the fun of it. I have a lot of great memories of that system I was using and these videos, and I'm really happy to have them now.

There's a lot of resources out there now for 3DS videos like this. While posting about this exact dump/archive I did, I was directed to a subreddit called r/3DSmovies and was told that these videos may be on there. I perused the subreddit, and found that there is an upload of The Amazing Spider-Man and Into the Spider-verse, but none of the other videos were readily available, and I have no reason to believe that these two movies are the exact same app from hShop and on Reddit. The subreddit was created around the time, if not just after, hShop removed the Movies & TV section. I did find another version of "your name." but this was certainly not the same, as I was only ever able to find it dubbed, where my dump is the only example I've ever seen of it being subbed on 3DS. I also checked my list against searches on the website 3DSMovies and didn't find them either. Another version of Into the Spider-verse, another dubbed "your name." but not the full list, and nothing indicating they're the same versions. I felt it was important enough to upload these ones specifically, just because I've never seen them anywhere else, and there's no way to know if I'm the last person that has these exact videos that were on hShop years back. They're all on the Internet Archive upload available at the button below, so take a look if you want. I didn't upload the Scott the Woz injects that I personally made, but if someone asks I may upload them as well just so that they're available.
